wells
Metal
Simple and functional, these corrugated metal wells do the job and are less expensive than concrete. We are able to order from a variety of custom sizes to fit the needs of your project.
Metal wells are also recommended for enlarged windows that don’t neccessarily need to conform to egress code requirements. These can be smaller with a lesser footprint in your landscape.
All of our metal wells are stainless steel so you won’t catch them rusting.
Concrete
Window wells are an essential part of any egress window project. These additions act as retaining walls, preventing earth and water from collecting around the window. They are constrcuted to city code, built with a large enough footprint to allow for the window to fully open and provide space and convenience if the need for egress arises.
Not only are wells functional, but they can greatly compliment the aesthectic of a new window. For the example shown here, we integrated steps into the design which the client used to create planter boxes.
Drainage
We excavate down about a 1 foot below the bottom of the window when installing windows at or near ground level. It’s important to slope the ground away from the house to divert moisture and rainfall. After laying down a thick, but permeable, weed fabric, we add about a 1/4 yard of 1 1/2” river rock to the inside of the well.
We’ve had over 10 years of success in rainy wet Portland with this simple drainage solution.
River rock is aesthetically pleasing and low maintainance.
